Injured in a Miami Car Accident – What does Bodily Injury Insurance Cover?

If you have been injured in an accident in South Florida, especially Miami or Fort Lauderdale, the first thing you might want to do is to look at your car insurance. The type of car insurance policy you may have will play a big role in how and if your personal injury lawsuit, as a result of a car accident, can be handled by your attorney. The following is an explanation of Bodily Injury (BI) liability claim:

BI or Bodily Injury insurance protects other people from the injuries that you have been held responsible for due to an accident. Basically if you are in an accident and you injured another, and it was determined that you were responsible, the injured party will likely have medical bills, lost wages, and or pain and suffering. Their personal injury attorney will likely attempt to sue your insurance company in order to be compensated for the injuries caused to their client. The amount of your bodily injury liability insurance will be used to pay for the injuries and claims of the other party. In cases where the Bodily injury insurance isn’t enough the personal injury attorney may attempt to go after you own personal assets.

In brief:

BI does not cover your injuries, it only covers the injuries of OTHERS that you have been held responsible for due to an accident.

BI is NOT required, but highly suggested.
